Let’s dance!
Games played in this window:
- South: Marquette (6) vs Stanford (3) 6:45pm
- East: Notre Dame (5) vs Washington State (4)
6:406:50pm - Midwest: UNLV (8) vs Kansas (1) 7:10pm
It looks like the New York City CBS affiliate will get the Washington State-Notre Dame game that starts at 6:40pm. What will come out on top? Will it be Notre Dame’s high-powered offense or Washington State’s oppressive defense?
Pre-Game
In my bracket, all the teams I have advancing in this window are still playing today - Notre Dame, Marquette, and Kansas.
So is your bracket looking as putrid as mine? I got burned by Drake losing in the first round as I had them going to the Sweet Sixteen. I think I recovered by picking both Siena and Villanova to advance to a matchup in the second round. My general strategy/hope is to always have my bracket intact two rounds after the current round being played. So, for instance, if I have one of my teams lose in the first round, I hope that it’s a team that I picked to lose in the second round anyway, thus minimizing the damage to my bracket. Through the first round, I only lost one Sweet Sixteen team so I’m in decent shape.
Start of Window #3
6:40pm: So the game should be starting right now but the Xavier-Purdue game still has over 10 minutes to go so we should be sticking with this game until it’s over or until a team pulls away.
6:44pm: Washington State-Notre Dame isn’t playing on MMOD yet either. The game may be starting late.
6:46pm: No such delay in the Stanford-Marquette game so let’s start with that while things get sorted out in Denver.
6:49pm: Quick 7-0 lead for Stanford with 18:28 to go in the half and Marquette quickly calls timeout.
6:50pm: Looks like the festivies are about to start in Denver so I’m off to MMOD to watch Washington State-Notre Dame and some Gus Johnson goodness!
6:57pm: Under-16 timeout and it’s a tight game with the score tied at 7.
7:03pm: I give up - I’m watching the last few minutes of the Xavier-Purdue game on my TV now. This is one close game with Xavier having coughed up a 60-50 lead only to take it back and now clinging to a 67-62 lead with 3:05 to go.
7:05pm: Goddamnit, when will people learn that free throws are supposed to be freebies? Xavier hits one of two to stretch their lead to 6.
7:06pm: Two free throws for Purdue and it’s Xavier up 58-64 with just under 3 minutes to go.
7:07pm: Lavender with a pretty floater and Xavier’s now up 72-64 with under 2 to go.
7:07pm: Timeout with 1:42 to go and Xaver leads 72-66 with the ball.
7:08pm: After jumping out to an early 7-0 lead, Stanford has let Marquette tie it up at 11 with under 12 minutes to go.
7:08pm: Easy dunk for Duncan and a rebound on the defensive end. He’s fouled and hits one of two to put Xavier up 75-66 with over a minute to go.
7:10pm: Purdue gets a quick three and now trails 75-69. They call a quick timeout with 1:07 to go.
7:11pm: Two free throws from Lavender and Xavier leads 77-69.
7:12pm: Deep three for Purdue and they cut it to a 77-72 lead for Xavier. Quick timeout with 48.7 seconds to go.
7:13pm: Notre Dame’s fallen behind 17-9 with 9:42 to go in the first half.
7:16pm: Two of two from Lavender at the free throw line and Xavier now leads 79-72.
7:20pm: Crump hits two free throws for Purdue. Xavier leads 79-74 with 44.4 seconds to go. This game is staggering to the finish.
7:21pm: Stanford and Marquette tied at 21 with 5:14 to go. This looks like a good game.
7:22pm: Xavier can’t inbound the ball and turn it over.
7:22pm: Purdue can’t cash in on the turnover and have to foul Anderson on the rebound.
7:23pm: The clock kept going after the foul call and now they have to put some time back on. This has been some shoddy clock work. Thankfully, this is the last game in the subregion.
7:24pm: So many opportunities on the offensive glass for Purdue and they can’t score. They do get to shoot free throws.
7:26pm: Two of two for Purdue and they now trail 80-76 with 27.2 seconds to go.
7:27pm: Lavender hits two free throws. Xavier leads 82-76 with 20.9 seconds to go.
7:27pm: Three-possession lead for Xavierwith 16.8 seconds to go. It’s over.
7:30pm: Think they’ll finally stop talking about their collapse against Ohio State last year? Xavier 85, Purdue 78.
7:31pm: We’re finally off to games in window #3 - after the break, of course. I refuse to wait - off to MMOD!
7:32pm: Washington State is choking Notre Dame’s prolific offense - they’re up 29-17 with under a minute to go.
7:33pm: We get the game on TV now - Washington State ball with 24.6 seconds to go.
7:34pm: Halftime and Washington State ahead of Notre Dame 32-19.
7:35pm: Whip-around to Stanford-Marquette just in time to see it go to halftime. 18-4 run by Marquette to take a 36-30 lead at the half.
7:37pm: Oh, right, there’s a third game in this window. UNLV is more than hanging in with Kansas as it’s tied at 17 with just over 8 minutes to go.
7:39pm: The interminably long Xavier-Purdue game caused most viewers to miss the first half of some games in the window so now they’re throwing it live to the broadcast teams for a recap. Madness indeed.
7:41pm: Wow, Stanford’s head coach lost it and got tossed from the game sometime in the first half. Talk about boneheaded moves…
7:46pm: UNLV looks awful from the field. They just keep throwing up brick after brick.
7:47pm: What I just said a minute ago.
7:47pm: Kansas hits a shot to take a 26-21 lead with 4:15 to go in the half.
7:48pm: That wasn’t an easy shot but UNLV just can’t seem to buy a basket.
7:52pm: Hey, UNLV hit a shot! Three-pointer and they now trail 27-24.
7:57pm: Three from McAlarney and a foul! Good start to the second half.
7:58pm: Would’ve been better if he the free throw though. Notre Dame trails 32-22.
8:02pm: Another made shot by Washington State and Notre Dame is forced to call a timeout with 16:02 to go. Washington State up 38-22.
8:03pm: At the half, Kansas leads UNLV 34-29.
8:05pm: Stanford’s closed the gap and now trail Marquette by 1, 47-46 with 14:56 to go. This game is now moving faster than Washington State-Notre Dame so we might get switched to this game if it stays close.
8:07pm: Under-16 timeout and Washington State leads Notre Dame 38-24. Notre Dame will shoot two free throws after the timeout.
8:10pm: We get switched to the Stanford-Marquette game with the score tied at 49.
8:11pm: Stanford hits two free throws and now leads 51-49. with 13:11 to go.
8:12pm: Three-pointer and Stanford opens up a five-point lead. Marquette calls timeout.
8:17pm: Notre Dame’s starting to cut into the deficit and now trail 42-33 with 10:55 to go.
8:25pm: After closing the gap a bit, Notre Dame has fallen far behind, 49-35 with under nine minutes to go.
8:26pm: Stanford calls timeout as Marquette has retaken the lead, 58-57.
8:29pm: Washington State is now up 54-37 with 7:17 to go.
8:32pm: Stanford can’t call timeout fast enough after Hayward’s three put Marquette up 65-59 with 6:00 to go.
8:36pm: Amazing spin move for a layup by James and Marquette now leads 67-63 with over four minutes to go.
8:38pm: Under-4 timeout with Marquette leading 67-64 and the ball.
8:39pm: Washington State leads Notre Dame 56-37 with 3:06 to go. I think it’s safe to call this one for Washington State.
8:40pm: Meanwhile, UNLV’s still hanging in there, trailing Kansas 44-37 with 13:58 to go.
8:43pm: Two free throws made and Stanford trails, 69-68 with 2:25 to go.
8:46pm: Two more free throws and Stanford now leads, 70-69 with 1:44 to go.
8:47pm: McNeal off the inbounds and Marquette retakes the lead, 71-70 with just over a minute to go.
8:48pm: Marquette got away with a non-call on Stanford’s three-point attempt.
8:49pm: Robin Lopez is fouled and he has a chance to put Stanford in the lead with 8.8 seconds to go.
8:50pm: Brick on the first one. It wasn’t even close to going in.
8:50pm: Final in Denver - Washington State 61, Notre Dame 41.
8:51pm: He makes the second one and it’s tied at 71.
8:52pm: Overtime!
8:53pm: Marquette’s last two offensive possessions were just awful.
8:54pm: Stanford gets the tip and opens the scoring in overtime. Stanford leads 73-71.

8:57pm: One of two at the line for James and it’s tied at 78.
8:57pm: Yet another three for McNeal and Marquette retakes the lead, 81-80.
8:59pm: This is the best game, by far, of the day. Even better than West Virginia beating Duke.
9:00pm: After putting up a valiant effort for most of the game, UNLV is fading, trailing Kansas 60-44 with 7:40 to go.
9:01pm: Great hustle by Marquette to get the offensive rebound inside of a minute.
9:03pm: Stanford gets the rebound on the Marquette miss and calls timeout with 9.2 seconds to go.
9:04pm: Brook Lopez makes a shot to give Stanford an 82-81 lead with 1.3 seconds to go.
9:06pm: Stanford breaks up the inbounds pass and it’s over - Stanford 82, Marquette 81.
9:07pm: We get switched to Kansas-UNLV. Kansas leads 61-47 with over six minutes to go. Kansas should be able to put this one away soon.
9:24pm: Finally, it’s over - Kansas 75, UNLV 56.
End of Window #3
